The Homeless Horse Center.org was founded by Brent Homfeld and Shannon Smith...born out of their mutual love of horses, as well as the indelible impact horse played in both their lives. Shannon grew up in Utah County as the only child of parents who spent their life organizing rodeos her father was the president and national director of the Utah High School Rodeo Association. Shannon’s passion for all things horses begun at a young age as a rodeo competitor she was nationally ranked goat tying champion, and has spent her life around horses and helping others learn about them.
Brent literally owes his life to the compassion of horses. Growing up in an abusive home, for years as a young boy he sought the shelter and the lifesaving warmth the horses gave him as he hid in the barn to escape the brutal attacks of a psychopathic stepfather. Brent has, therefore dedicated his life to helping both horses and people find hope and serenity.
On their cozy farm in Chester, Utah, they provide a nurturing community that empowers both horses and people a new life. Shannon’s is working on her accreditation from PATH Intl (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International).
